Do I Need a Wireless Microphone?
The camcorder’s built-in microphone is perfectly suitable for general filming and can capture speeches clearly when the camera is reasonably close to the person speaking or to a nearby speaker.
A good rule of thumb is: if the person filming can hear the speech clearly from where they’re standing, the camcorder should be able to capture it well enough too.
A wireless microphone is worth adding when clear speech is especially important and you don’t want to rely on the camera being close enough. Because the mic is positioned much nearer to the speaker, it gives you a cleaner, more direct recording of their voice with less room sound in the background.
So it really comes down to what matters most:
If you want simple filming with no extra equipment to think about, the built-in mic may be all you need – just keep the camera reasonably close.
If you want the clearest possible recording of vows, speeches, ceremonies or presentations, a wireless microphone is the better option.
Do I Need a Tripod?
For most weddings, you may be perfectly happy filming handheld. It keeps things simple, makes it easy to pass the camcorder between people and can actually give you more natural, dynamic footage as the person filming moves around and reacts to what’s happening.
A tripod is more useful when you want the camera to stay in one fixed position for a longer period of time. For example, if you’d like to record the whole ceremony from one viewpoint without someone needing to hold the camera throughout, setting it up on a tripod can be the more comfortable option.
So it really depends on how you want to film:
- If you want simple, flexible filming that can move around with the day, handheld may be all you need.
- If you want to set the camera in a predefined position and leave it recording, particularly for something like the ceremony, a tripod is worth adding.
